In Islam the day starts at sunset, so Eid night begins on the evening of Saturday, May 15 in the US and UK.

How the date is worked out

Eid al-Adha is the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic year. The month begins when the new crescent is seen after sunset on the 29th of the month before, Dhul Qa’dah. If it isn’t seen, the month runs to 30 days.

For 1448 AH, the astronomical new moon is on May 6, 2027. The crescent is expected to be visible from parts of the world on the evening of May 6 or 7, which puts 1 Dhul Hijjah on May 7 or 8, and Eid nine days later. Saudi Arabia’s Umm al-Qura calendar sets Eid on May 16. Countries in South Asia usually rely on local sightings, which often come a day later.

Why your date might differ

  • Local sighting. Some communities start the month only when the moon is seen in their own country.
  • Following Saudi Arabia. Many mosques in North America and Europe follow the Saudi announcement, because Eid al-Adha is tied to Hajj.
  • Calculation. Some organisations, such as the Fiqh Council of North America, use astronomical calculation and announce dates months ahead.

So two mosques in the same city may pray Eid on different days. Follow your local mosque or the authority your community uses. The is Eid tomorrow? page explains the announcements in more detail.

Eid al-Adha 2027 in the USA

Eid isn’t a federal holiday in the US, so most people take a personal day. New York City public schools close for Eid al-Adha, and a growing number of districts in New Jersey, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas and elsewhere do too. Since May 16, 2027 is a Sunday, many families will pray and celebrate without needing time off. Large Eid prayers are held in mosques, parks and convention centres.

Bakrid 2027 in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh

In South Asia, Eid al-Adha is better known as Bakrid or Bakra Eid, and it is a public holiday. Pakistan usually gives three or four days off. In Bangladesh, millions travel from Dhaka to their home villages, and cattle markets (haats) fill every town in the week before Eid. There is more on how each country celebrates in Eid in India, USA, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Planning your Qurbani for these dates

Qurbani can be given from after the Eid prayer on the 10th until sunset on the 12th (or the 13th in the Shafi’i school). If you give through a charity abroad, the dates where the animal is slaughtered are the ones that count. That is often a day later in Bangladesh than in the US.

We slaughter after the Eid prayer in Bangladesh, which in 2027 is expected on Monday, May 17. We tell you as soon as your animal has been sacrificed, so you know when your hair-and-nails restriction ends. For the full plan, from 1 Dhul Hijjah to the last day of Tashreeq, read the Eid al-Adha 2027 Qurbani guide.

Dates are estimates based on astronomical calculations and the Umm al-Qura calendar, and depend on the moon sighting. Hadith references include the collection and number so you can check them. Where a narration is graded weak, we say so. Scholars differ on some details, so ask a local scholar about your own situation.
