Short answer

Eid al-Adha 2027 is expected on Sunday, May 16 in the USA, and on Monday, May 17 in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected around March 9 in the USA and March 10 in South Asia. Final dates depend on each country’s moon sighting.

Eid looks different in Delhi, Dallas, Lahore and Dhaka. The prayers and the Sunnahs are the same, but the dates, the holidays and the way Qurbani is done vary a lot.

South Asia is often a day after North America and Saudi Arabia, because the new crescent tends to be seen later there. More detail is in Eid al-Adha 2027 date.

Eid in the USA

Neither Eid is a federal holiday, but recognition is growing. New York City public schools close for both Eids, as do a number of districts in New Jersey, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas and elsewhere. Employers have to make reasonable accommodation for religious observance. Eid prayers are held in mosques, parks and convention centres, often with several sessions to fit around work. Since Eid al-Adha 2027 falls on a Sunday, many families won’t need time off.

Qurbani is the hard part. Home slaughter isn’t allowed in most places, and most commercial plants stun animals, so many American Muslims give their Qurbani through a charity overseas.

Eid in India

Eid al-Adha, widely known as Bakrid, is a national gazetted holiday. Huge congregations gather at mosques such as the Jama Masjid in Delhi. Families cook biryani and other meat dishes and share Qurbani meat with neighbours and the poor. Several Indian states restrict or ban cattle slaughter, so goats are the most common Qurbani animal in much of the country.

Eid in Pakistan

The government usually announces three or four days of public holiday for Eid al-Adha. Weeks before, cattle markets (mandis) appear on the edges of every city, and many families keep their animal at home for a few days before Eid. Charities and mosques organise collective Qurbani for those who can’t manage their own.

Eid in Bangladesh

Eid al-Adha is one of the biggest events of the year. Millions travel home from Dhaka and other cities to their villages. Temporary cattle markets, called haats, fill the towns in the days before Eid, and the cow is the main Qurbani animal. Even so, many rural families and around a million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar can’t afford an animal of their own. For them, the meat others share is often the only meat they eat all year. That is why we work there.

Wherever you are, the Qurbani rules are the same

In every country, a valid Qurbani needs a sheep, goat, cow, buffalo or camel of the right age, without clear defects. It is slaughtered alive after the Eid prayer, between the 10th and 12th of Dhul Hijjah, with Bismillahi Allahu Akbar. If you give through a charity in another country, the date and the Eid prayer where the animal is slaughtered are what count. The Qurbani rules cover the details.

With us, your animal is slaughtered by hand in rural Bangladesh after the Eid prayer there, with no stunning. The meat goes to Rohingya refugees and poor families, and you get photos and video. A cow share is $170, a sheep $175 and a goat $200.

Dates are estimates based on astronomical calculations and the Umm al-Qura calendar, and depend on the moon sighting. Hadith references include the collection and number so you can check them. Where a narration is graded weak, we say so. Scholars differ on some details, so ask a local scholar about your own situation.
