Eid al-Adha is the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, so its date is known about nine or ten days ahead, once the Dhul Hijjah moon has been sighted. For 2027, the first day of Eid is expected on Sunday, May 16 in the USA, and Eid finishes with the last day of Tashreeq on Wednesday, May 19. Check with your local mosque for the confirmed date.
“Is Eid tomorrow?” With Eid al-Fitr, the answer often comes late on the 29th night of Ramadan. Eid al-Adha is easier. Its date is set when Dhul Hijjah begins, so by the time Eid is close, the answer is already out.
How the Eid al-Adha date is confirmed
- On the evening of 29 Dhul Qa’dah, people look for the new crescent after sunset.
- If it is seen, the next day is 1 Dhul Hijjah. If not, Dhul Qa’dah runs to 30 days.
- Eid al-Adha is nine days after 1 Dhul Hijjah, on the 10th.
In the USA, communities follow different authorities. Some follow Saudi Arabia, because Eid al-Adha is tied to the Day of Arafah during Hajj. Some follow local sightings through groups like the Hilal Committee. Others follow the Fiqh Council of North America, which uses astronomical calculation and publishes dates months in advance. So two mosques in the same city may announce different days. Go with your own mosque.

When does Eid finish?
Eid al-Adha lasts four days: Eid day itself (the 10th) and the three days of Tashreeq (the 11th, 12th and 13th). For 2027 in the US, that is Sunday, May 16 to Wednesday, May 19.
- Fasting is not allowed on any of these four days (Sahih Muslim 1141).
- The takbeer after fard prayers continues until Asr on the 13th.
- Qurbani must be done by sunset on the 12th in the Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools, or the 13th in the Shafi’i school.
If Eid is tomorrow: a checklist
- Find your prayer time. Many mosques hold two or three prayers. Check the time and the place, which is sometimes a park or hall.
- Tell work or school. Eid isn’t a federal holiday, but many districts, including New York City public schools, close for it.
- Lay out your best clothes and plan a ghusl in the morning.
- Don’t plan breakfast before the prayer. On Eid al-Adha the Sunnah is to eat afterwards.

- Make sure your Qurbani is arranged. Animals are slaughtered only after the Eid prayer, so the day before is very late to start looking.
The Qurbani in brief
One goat or sheep, or a seventh of a cow, covers one person’s Qurbani. The animal must be old enough (1 year for a goat, 2 for a cow) and free of clear defects. It is slaughtered alive with a sharp knife and Bismillahi Allahu Akbar. Many US abattoirs stun animals first, which is why many American Muslims give their Qurbani overseas.
