Short answer

Goat sacrifice in Islam is a valid Qurbani for one person. The goat must be at least one full year old and free of clear defects. It is slaughtered after the Eid prayer, between 10 and 12 Dhul Hijjah, while alive, with a sharp knife and Bismillahi Allahu Akbar.

In much of South Asia and Africa, the goat is one of the most common Qurbani animals. It is affordable, it is a whole animal for one person, and its meat is eaten in almost every home.

Qurbani meaning in English

Qurbani is usually translated as “sacrifice”. Its Arabic root, q-r-b, means nearness. A Qurbani is an act done to come closer to Allah. In fiqh books the Eid sacrifice is called Udhiyah. Eid al-Adha itself means the Festival of Sacrifice.

Why does Islam have animal sacrifice?

People sometimes ask why Islam has animal sacrifice at all. The Quran answers directly: “It is not their meat or their blood that reaches Allah. It is your devotion that reaches Him” (Surah Al-Hajj 22:37). Allah does not need anything from us. The sacrifice is for our sake.

  • It remembers obedience. Ibrahim (AS) was ready to give up his son for Allah, and Allah ransomed him with a ram (Surah As-Saffat 37:107). Each year we give up something of value in the same spirit.
  • It feeds the poor. Allah says: “Eat from them and feed the needy who do not ask and the needy who ask” (Surah Al-Hajj 22:36). Meat that would be a luxury for a poor family is given to them free.
  • It teaches gratitude. Livestock is a blessing. Slaughtering in Allah’s name, with mercy, is a reminder of who provides it.

Islam also sets strict limits on how an animal is treated: no cruelty, a sharp blade, no slaughtering in front of other animals. The sacrifice is meant to be done with mercy.

Rules for goat sacrifice

Age

A goat must have completed one full lunar year. This is stricter than for sheep. The Hanafi allowance for a six-month-old sheep does not apply to goats. Age is usually checked by the teeth: a yearling goat has its first pair of permanent front teeth.

Shares

One goat is one Qurbani for one person. It can’t be shared between two people, though the person giving it may include their family in the reward, as the Prophet ﷺ did.

Health

The goat must not be:

  • clearly blind in one or both eyes
  • clearly sick
  • so lame that it can’t walk to the place of slaughter
  • so thin it has no marrow in its bones

These four come from the hadith of al-Bara’ ibn Azib (Sunan Abu Dawud 2802, Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 1497). Scholars add a horn broken off at the root, most teeth missing, and more than a third of an ear missing. A goat born without horns, or a castrated goat, is fine.

Eid ul Adha slaughtering, step by step

  1. Wait until the Eid prayer has finished in that place.
  2. Sharpen the knife well, out of the goat’s sight.
  3. Lead the goat gently to the spot, away from other animals being slaughtered.
  4. Lay it on its left side, facing the Qibla.
  5. Say Bismillahi Allahu Akbar and make one quick cut across the throat. It should sever the windpipe, food pipe and both jugular veins, without cutting off the head.
  6. Let the blood drain fully, and wait until the animal is completely still before skinning.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has prescribed excellence in everything. When you slaughter, slaughter well” (Sahih Muslim 1955). The goat must be alive at the cut. If pre-stunning kills it first, it is neither halal nor a Qurbani.

Goat or something else?

A goat is a good choice if you want a whole animal for yourself. If you are giving for several family members, a cow share ($170 each) covers one person for slightly less, and a whole cow covers seven. There is a side-by-side comparison in cow, goat or sheep Qurbani, and the full list of permitted animals is in sacrificial animals for Eid ul Adha.

Quick questions

Is goat sacrifice compulsory? Qurbani is wajib in the Hanafi school for adults who own the nisab, and a confirmed Sunnah in the other schools. A goat is one way to fulfil it, not the only way. See is Qurbani mandatory?

Can a female goat be sacrificed? Yes. Male and female goats are both valid.

Can I sacrifice a goat for Aqiqah and Qurbani at once? No. A goat is one act of worship for one person. Use separate animals, or shares in a cow.

What happens to the skin? It can be used or given away, but not sold, and it can’t be given to the butcher as payment.
